Karil the Tainted's equipment is a set of Ranged armour and crossbow from the Barrows minigame. Completing the Barrows minigame does not guarantee players will get a Barrows item. The whole armour set requires 70 Defence and 70 Ranged to equip. The crossbow only has the Ranged requirement.
As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic Defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks even when using melee. Karil's crossbow, unlike many other crossbows, is two-handed and requires a special type of ammunition called Bolt racks. Bolt racks can be obtained by opening chests in the Barrows minigame, buying from Ak-Haranu on the Port Phasmatys docks for 50 coins each, buying them from the Emblem Trader for 360 Bounty Hunter points each, or the Last Man Standing shop, or trading with another player.
Although many parts of it see use, the full set is rarely seen in unison. A common complaint is how situational the set effect is and how low the stats are for such a high level degradable armour set. Karil's crossbow is less accurate than a Rune crossbow, and the ammunition is weaker than steel bolts (as Bolt racks give +55 Ranged Strength). However, the Karil's crossbow does have the speed of a Magic shortbow, and the bolt racks match the strength of amethyst arrows.
Note: Karil's armour will still degrade if safespotting!
Set effect
Tainted Shot: If the Ranged attack is successful, it has a 25% chance of lowering the target player's Agility level by 20%.
The set effect of Karil's set is a source of criticism, as it is seen as not very useful, especially as it has no effect on NPCs. This has been a long-standing issue for Karil's set as well as Torag's set owners wanting a better set effect compared to the other brothers.
